Activated Carbon
Activated carbon is recognized as the safest and most efficient way to treat airborne chemicals, gaseous pollutants, fumes and odors. Carbon that is activated undergoes a process that opens millions of tiny pores and fissures to enhance the material's adsorbent properties.
A single pound of activated carbon typically has a surface area of 125 acres. In fact, activated carbon is so effective that it is used by the military to combat the world’s most dangerous airborne pollutants.
Activated carbon has been specially treated to open up millions of tiny pores and fissures. This creates a huge internal surface area. In fact, less than a handful of carbon has the surface area of an entire football field. When polluted air is drawn into the air purifier, chemicals, gases and odors are trapped in these openings. An air purifier made specifically for chemicals and odors will have a thick filter of granular activated carbon. Avoid any air purifier that uses only a thin carbon filter. This type of air purifier simply does not have enough carbon to be effective. It will quickly become saturated and may stop adsorbing within weeks or even days. A large carbon filter could last up to two years depending on the level of odors and chemicals in the dwelling.
Filter Tips
- Pre-Filter: Can be visually inspected: When both sides are of similar color should be changed, regular household usage would require Renewal 3-6 months You can vacuum every 2-3 months and replace every 6 months if need be.
- Tar Trap Prefilter typically need to be changed more frequently. Renewal 2-3 months
- UV lamp (if applicable) is recommended to change yearly. Renewal 12 months
- HEPA Filter: Can be visually inspected: When both sides are of similar color = should be changed, regular household usage would require Renewal 2-3 years
- Carbon Filter: Found inside the unit in a canister from a few inches away, smell the exhaust and if an unpleasant sour odor is emitted that is an indication for renewal, regular household usage would require. Renewal 2-3 years
PS: The above estimated time periods all variable and dependent upon your usage and the contaminants in a given area. The above can be used as a general guideline.
